Justin will provide insight into what the federal regional economic development organization has done to support Alberta through COVID-19 and to mitigate the negative economic impacts experienced in Wood Buffalo. From liquidity and advisory assistance for small businesses, to support for supply chain expansion and training of skilled workers, WD has stepped up to help Alberta’s economy. Justin will also highlight the federal government’s role in supporting new mineral and energy value chains and carbon sequestration. Lastly, he will speak to the importance of building locally informed federal economic development approaches, which includes garnering the ingenuity and expertise of the oil sands and the broader energy industry to help drive transformational opportunities for Alberta.

Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD)

Justin Riemer assumed responsibility as Assistant Deputy Minister for Western Economic Diversification Canada’s Alberta Region in the fall of 2019. Previously, he held several senior positions at the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, providing leadership and achieving results in regional economic development, industry development, investment attraction and growth of advanced technologies. As a passionate and dynamic leader of industry and economic development in Alberta, Justin has a significant depth and breadth of experience in innovation and industry development policies and programs. Justin holds a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Carleton University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science. He is married and the proud father of two young men.
